What is grounding anyway?
Grounding is simply a way of connecting with the Earth’s energy field.
In ancient times, humans were grounded all the time because they didn’t wear shoes, lived in naturally-made huts and spent 100% of their time in nature. Today, we live in a way that’s super-disconnected from nature, surrounded by electronic devices, Wi-Fi, and radio waves and we’re constantly stressed by all the imaginary stressors of western life.
Symptoms of being ungrounded are anxiety, tension, worry, racing thoughts absent-mindedness, clumsiness, inability to focus and even illness or disease.
Many of us live perpetually in an ungrounded state, with thoughts racing from one task or issue to another, forgetting things all the time, multi-tasking to the point of total chaos, as well as experiencing the occasional (or frequent) panic attack.
So what can you do about it? Ground yourself.
There are many ways to ground, the easiest is just to get out in nature and go for a walk, get your bare feet into the grass, or in the sand on the beach. The Earth is naturally negatively charged, with free flowing negative ions. Negative ions have been shown to counteract free radicals, reduce inflammation and create a calm in the body. Not only is the atmosphere positively charged, but electronics and pollution create positive ions, which have been linked to inflammation. As most of us know, inflammation is the cause of most diseases on the planet—including cancer.
“Generally speaking, negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy,” says Pierce J. Howard, PhD, author of The Owners Manual for the Brain: Everyday Applications from Mind Brain Research and director of research at the Center for Applied Cognitive Sciences in Charlotte, N.C.
By visualizing one’s connection from the High Self, through the Physical Body and rooting down into the Earth, we can experience an instant calm.
Another way to ground yourself is by practicing a simple grounding meditation. By visualizing one’s connection from the High Self, through the Physical Body and rooting down into the Earth, we can experience an instant calm. It helps with feelings of safety and security. It lowers blood pressure, eases tension and calms the mind allowing clear and free-flowing thought.
We’re spiritual beings having a human experience, so essentially, we’re on a foreign planet. It’s our nature to be ‘up in the air’. Grounding keeps us on the Earth and keeps our Physical Body and Mind in alignment with health and wellness.
